Fun in the sun is expected in San Diego.
Whether you are looking forward to sinking your feet into the nice warm sand or paddling out in the San Diego surf, you are going to find a great time at the beach.

We have listed the most enjoyable beaches and given brief descriptions and photos for each.

Oceanside City Beach

Oceanside City Beach is located at the northern most end of San Diego near Camp Pendelton Marine Base. This beach is popular due to its variety of uses and facilities.
Its approximate two mile stretch includes good sand beaches and plenty of room to play.

Carlsbad State Beach

Carlsbad State Beach offers a well maintained cement path that runs along this stretch of beach. Though not open to cycling or skating of any kind it offers a safe walk along this beautiful San Diego beach. For more info. call (760) 438-3143.

South Carlsbad State Beach

South Carlsbad State Beach is a great beach especially if you are looking for a place to camp out. This beach is just a short walk down a couple flights of stairs from the camp above and offers plenty of good sand to sink your feet in to. For more info. call (760) 438-3143.

Beacons Beach

Beacons Beach is actually located in Leucadia This beach is a favorite for the local Surfers. A bit hard to find, no life guards and difficult access makes this one of the less popular tourist spots. For more info. call (760) 633-2740.

Stone Step Beach

Stone Step Beach is also located in Leucadia and it too is a bit hard to find. This beach is a popular fishing site and has good surfing. However, when high tide rolls in there is no longer a sandy beach to enjoy. Only the crashing of waves can be enjoyed.

Moonlight Beach

Moonlight Beach is another wonderful San Diego beach with all of the amenities. It offers plenty of parking, great sand and space to have the family picnic. For more info. call (760) 633-2740.

Swami's Beach 

Swami's is a popular surfing beach and has a beautiful view of the coastline to the south. This beach has little parking and is down a large flight of stairs but, is well worth the effort. For more info. call (760) 633-2740. 

San Elijo State Beach

San Elijo State Beach. Along this long stretch of beach you will find all you need to have a great camping excursion. Just a short walk up a small flight of stairs you will find showers, restrooms and a fire ring / barbecue at your reserved campsite. For more info. call (760) 753-5091.

Cardiff State Beach

Cardiff State Beach offers great tide pools during low tide as well as picnic spots, restrooms and lifeguards. Even though there is a lack of sand the view is great and the stay is enjoyable. For more info. call (760) 438-2675.

Del Mar City Beach

Del Mar City Beach has easy access and with its sandy beaches is popular to the locals and visitors It also has green grass near that you can picnic on. You can also have the comfort of knowing that restrooms and lifeguards are close by. For more info. call (619)755-1556.

 

Torrey Pines State Beach

Torrey Pines State Beach. With a wide scenic stretch of beach, this is the perfect place to go for fresh air and your occasional moments of privacy. Staffed with lifeguards, parking and restrooms, this is a perfect place for a family get together. For more info. call (619)755-2063.

Blacks Beach

Blacks Beach, formerly known as Torrey Pines City Beach and Torrey Pines State Beach, has often been referred to as a nude beach. Nudity on San Diego beaches is against the law though due to poor access, this beach is not often patrolled.
Nevertheless Many San Diego locals and visitors alike come to this beach to relax and enjoy. Be aware of high tide and strong rips as lifeguards are scarce on this San Diego beach.

There are no rest room or shower facilities here. Situated below the cliffs of Torrey Pines, often as high as 300 feet, you will usually find hang gliders and remote controlled airplanes filling the skies above.

Scripps Beach

Scripps Beach is near Scripps Institution. If you have an interest in Oceanography take some time and scope out the tide pools where you're sure to find things of interest. If surfing is your thing this is a great place to enjoy the waves, the most popular place is near the pier. La Jolla Shores is also within walking distance of this San Diego Beach.

La Jolla Shores 

Known best for its excellent beach spots, day or night, La Jolla attracts any and everyone looking for a great time. Jogging, swimming and picnics are made fun and easy with this vast beach and great walks. This beach is nearly a mile long of smooth sand.
Kellog park lies adjacent to the beach, and offers full ammenities as well as playground equipment, restrooms and lifeguard services.
This is also one of the most popular beaches for scuba diving lessons in Southern California. For more info. call (619) 221-8900.

La Jolla Cove

The north facing La Jolla Cove has unusually coarse sand. Grassy Scripps Park is immediately adjacent and an excellent area for picnicking. Water visibility at the Cove can sometimes exceed 30 feet.

La Jolla Cove lies within the San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, which helps to ensure that marine life remains plentiful. This is a look but don't touch area and the possession of game is unlawful. For more info. call (619)221-8900.

Children's Pool

Children's Pool is a Wonderful place to take the entire family especially if you have young children. This man made cove is protected from large waves and currents and offers life guards and restrooms.

Marine Street Beach 

This Beach off the back streets of La Jolla is small and quaint though offers minimal facilities. But you can find good skin diving along the shores. Sunbathers can enjoy the shore as well. For more info. call (619)221-8900.

Windansea Beach

Lounging on the huge sandstone rocks attracts sunbathers and sunset viewers. Surfers think of this as a prime surfing area. If you want to have a romantic visit, this beach can accomodate with its beautiful sunsets and surfs. For more info. call (619)221-8900.


Bird Rock Beach

There are no facilities here, but you can find great surfing and diving spots. A boulder off the coast attracts many sea birds to hence the name Bird Rock Beach. Unless you are a serious surfer or feel the need to see birds on a rock I recommend avoiding this beach. For more info. call (619)221-8900.

Tourmaline Surf Park 

No swimmers allowed, but surfers one and all can find great surf in this area. Skin-divers can also admire this spot with it's underwater scenery. Although swimming is not allowed there are picnic spots, restrooms and lifeguards. For more info. call (619)221-8900.

Pacific Beach

The perfect place for fun in the sun, Pacific Beach offers great walks, eateries, sand. If you are looking for a place to fill all of your families needs, this is the place! From malls to rentals to shows and did i mention people lots of people. For more info. call (619)221-8900.

 

Mission Bay

With its many coves, grassy areas and water spots, Mission Bay attracts all who enjoy the outdoors. From sailing to softball you can find a spot to do just about any activity you'd like.
If you are the type of person to just take it all in, Mission Bay offers great viewing spots as well.
This is a wonderful place to take the family for a picnic and a day filled with fun and sun.

Mission Beach

Most enjoyable for its boardwalks and many areas to bike, jog, walk and rollerblade this beach is also great for surfing. You can also be comforted to know there are lifeguards, restrooms and showers. For more info. call (619)221-8900.

Ocean Beach

Ocean Beach just south of Pacific Beach is a great place for dog lovers. Your dogs are allowed to be free at "Dog Beach" at the north end.
The Ocean Beach Municipal Pier is located at the south end of the beach and is available to the public for walking and fishing.
There is a restaurant and bait shop on the pier. Fishing from the pier does not require a fishing license, but catch regulations are enforced. For more info. call (760) 221-8900.

Sunset Cliffs

You won't find a long stretch of sandy beach here, but you will find the peace and privacy of small hidden beaches along the cliffs. Tide pools can be reached down a staircase where you can also swim, surf or just admire the sunsets.
Due to the cliffs erosion, hiking and climbing are not recommended.

Coronado City Beach 

Now here is a beach with plenty of sand, tons of beach and excellent for all interests! Surfing, swimming and fishing are some of the many things you can do here. There are also nearby picnic spots and grassy areas for playing.

Silver Strand State Beach

Two miles of shoreline is what gives this spot its name with tiny silver shells grazing the shore. You can also experience clamming, and surf fishing here as well as your nude sunbathers who stick mostly near the north end. Camping with self-contained RV's and trailer campers are welcome. Imperial Beach

This beach attracts many visitors and locals.
